Physical and Fabrication Properties
Physical and fabrication data
SM-PHYS-C93200| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Machinability rating | 70 (CDA scale, free-cutting brass C36000 = 100) |
| Brinell hardness, typical | ≈65 (500 kg load) |

Physical and fabrication values are published reference data (CDA / producer data sheets). Machinability: free-cutting brass C36000 = 100.
Corrosion Characteristics and Service
C93200 offers good resistance to atmospheric exposure, fresh water and many neutral solutions, and has the long record of bearing duty that its lead phase supports. Lead is also the reason the alloy is not selected for potable-water wetted components under U.S. lead-free requirements; for drinking-water contact, choose a lead-free grade and confirm approvals for your jurisdiction.
Strong oxidizing acids, ammonia-bearing media and sulfide-rich environments attack copper alloys, and C93200 is no exception. Seawater service is better met by the aluminium bronze and nickel aluminium bronze grades on this site.
Manufacturing and Machining
Machining is the strength of C93200. The lead phase breaks chips and reduces tool wear, so flanges can be faced, bored and drilled at good rates and with a smooth finish. That keeps cost down on high-volume or tight-tolerance flange work.
Leaded bronze is generally joined by brazing or soldering rather than fusion welding, and the lead makes it unsuitable for hot-forming. Casting method matters: continuous-cast bar gives a dense structure for machining from bar or cored stock, while sand and centrifugal casting suit near-net flange blanks.
UNS C93200 Flanges and Applications
C93200 flanges are specified for general-purpose and low-to-moderate pressure piping where machinability, dimensional accuracy and reasonable cost matter more than seawater resistance: lube-oil and fuel systems, general water service (non-potable), pump housings and machine connections. It is also a common stock alloy for plate and ring flanges machined from bar.
Flange types in UNS C93200
SM-FLG-C93200| Flange type | Notes |
|---|---|
| Plate Flanges | Machined from continuous-cast bar or cast blanks |
| Threaded / Screwed Flanges | Clean thread cutting in the tapped bore |
| Reducing Flanges | Easy bore and thread machining for reductions |
| Custom / Special Flanges | Short-cycle machining to customer drawings |
- Pump and machinery connections
- Lubrication and fuel-oil piping
- General industrial and non-potable water lines
- Bushing-type flange rings and OEM parts
Inspection and Documentation
Material verification is against UNS C93200 and the casting specification on the order, with a Material Test Certificate (MTC) where required. Dimensional inspection covers OD, thickness, bore, PCD and hole pattern; visual examination checks gasket faces for porosity. Hardness, liquid penetrant and pressure testing are carried out only when the purchase order lists them.

UNS C93200: common questions
What is UNS C93200 bronze?
C93200 is a high-leaded tin bronze, also known as SAE 660 or 83-7-7-3, with roughly 83 percent copper, 7 percent tin, 7 percent lead and 3 percent zinc. It is cast to ASTM B584, B271 or B505 depending on the method.
Can C93200 flanges be welded?
Leaded bronzes are generally joined by brazing or soldering rather than fusion welding.
Is C93200 suitable for drinking water?
No. Its lead content means it is not used for potable-water wetted parts under U.S. lead-free requirements. Use a lead-free grade and confirm approvals for your jurisdiction.
