Corrosion Characteristics and Service
In seawater C95800 forms a thin, adherent oxide film that stays protective in flowing water, and the alloy resists the erosion-corrosion and cavitation that damage many other copper alloys at pumps, valves and bends. Copper alloys also resist the settlement of marine macro-fouling better than steels do. These properties are the reason nickel aluminium bronze is used for ship propellers, seawater pumps, valve bodies and seawater piping components.
Corrosion resistance in castings depends on microstructure. Cooling rate and any heat treatment after welding or repair affect selective phase attack in seawater, so specifications for critical seawater service commonly set heat-treatment and repair requirements. Follow the requirements stated in your project specification. Galvanic coupling to steel bolting and to less noble metals should be assessed in the design.
Manufacturing and Machining
The 20 machinability rating means slower cutting rates than other bronzes. Rigid set-ups, sharp carbide tooling, positive cutting geometry and generous coolant keep dimensional accuracy and finish under control on face, bore and bolt-hole operations. We plan machining allowance and sequence accordingly, particularly on larger flanges.
C95800 is weldable with matching filler by qualified procedures, and weld repair of castings is a normal practice when the specification permits it, followed by any heat treatment the specification requires. Sand castings, centrifugal castings and continuous-cast bar are all used as flange stock depending on diameter, quantity and specification.

UNS C95800 Flanges and Applications
C95800 flanges are the right alloy when a project specification names nickel aluminium bronze for seawater duty: seawater cooling, fire-main and ballast systems, desalination plants, offshore platforms, shipbuilding and marine pumps and valves. They are produced as slip-on, blind, lap-joint, loose, plate, socket-weld and special flanges.

Inspection and Documentation
Material is verified against UNS C95800 and the applicable casting specification (ASTM B148 or the project specification), and an MTC is issued where required. Dimensional inspection covers OD, thickness, bore, PCD and hole pattern; surfaces and gasket faces are examined visually. For critical seawater service, liquid penetrant or radiographic examination, mechanical tests and heat-treatment records are provided when the purchase order calls for them.

UNS C95800: common questions
What are C95800 flanges used for?
C95800 nickel aluminium bronze flanges are used in seawater cooling, fire-main and ballast systems, desalination plants, offshore platforms, shipbuilding and marine pumps and valves.
What are the minimum mechanical properties of C95800?
ASTM B148 sets a minimum of 85 ksi (about 585 MPa) tensile strength, 35 ksi (about 240 MPa) yield strength and 15 percent elongation for sand castings.
What is the difference between C95800 and C63000?
Both are nickel aluminium bronzes. C95800 is cast to ASTM B148; C63000 is wrought bar, forging or plate. They are not drop-in replacements, so follow the specification on your drawing.
