Corrosion Characteristics and Service
An aluminium oxide film forms on the surface of aluminium bronze and gives C95400 good resistance to fresh water, brackish water, many industrial atmospheres and non-oxidizing acids, with resistance to erosion and cavitation damage well beyond that of tin bronzes. In wear service the alloy is used for gears, bushings and valve seats.
For continuous seawater service, the nickel aluminium bronzes (C95500, C95800) are the more common specification because of their nickel content and higher strength. C95400 remains widely used in marine hardware, pump parts and valve components where the service environment is milder or where the project specification names it. Galvanic coupling to steel bolting should be considered in the design.
Manufacturing and Machining
C95400 machines at a rating of 60 on the CDA scale — slower than leaded bronzes, much easier than C95800. Rigid set-ups and carbide tooling produce clean faces and bores. It is weldable with matching filler by a qualified procedure; repair welds and heat treatment must follow the specification.
Flange blanks are produced from sand, centrifugal or continuous-cast stock. Heat-treated condition is available where the specification calls for the higher strength level, which changes both the required machining allowance and the final hardness.
UNS C95400 Flanges and Applications
C95400 flanges serve pump and valve connections, marine pipework, hydraulic and heavy-machinery connections, and any joint exposed to wear, shock or vibration. Where the drawing calls for a stronger alloy than leaded bronze but not the seawater duty of C95800, C95400 is the usual middle choice.
Flange types in UNS C95400
SM-FLG-C95400| Flange type | Notes |
|---|---|
| Slip-On Flanges | General marine and pump pipework |
| Socket-Weld Flanges | Weldable small-bore connections |
| Blind Flanges | Wear-resistant closure plates |
| Threaded / Screwed Flanges | Higher-strength tapped flanges |
- Pump and valve flanges
- Marine pipework and deck hardware connections
- Hydraulic and heavy-machinery connections
- Wear-exposed flange rings and plates
Inspection and Documentation
Material is verified against UNS C95400 and the casting specification, with an MTC where required. Dimensional inspection covers OD, thickness, bore, PCD and hole pattern, and visual examination covers gasket faces. Hardness testing, liquid penetrant or radiographic examination and pressure testing are carried out only when the purchase order requires them; heat-treatment records are provided when heat treatment is specified.

UNS C95400: common questions
What is UNS C95400 aluminium bronze?
C95400 is a cast copper-aluminium-iron alloy, also called aluminum bronze grade C. ASTM B148 sets a minimum tensile strength of 75 ksi (about 515 MPa) in the as-cast condition.
Can C95400 be heat treated?
Yes. C95400 is among the ASTM B148 grades that respond to heat treatment, which raises strength. The heat-treated condition must be stated on the order.
Should I choose C95400 or C95800 for seawater?
C95800 nickel aluminium bronze is the more common seawater specification. C95400 is widely used in general marine, pump and valve service. The project specification decides.
